Episode Thirty Four

The Courage to Contribute

Throughout history different dispensations ushered in seismic social, political and economic changes. It was the responsibility of the people to understand the spiritual significance of the season they were in. In our current dispensation there are many choices before us. We must be selective however in our thoughts, purpose, process and strategy.

I recently heard, U.S. Senator Cory Booker say we are in a “Moral Moment”. Senator Booker understands the spiritual impact of the “moral moment” we are in and chose to rise to the challenge. After much time, discipline and preparation he strategically executed.

Senator Booker, understood he was elected as a public servant to the US Senate for such a time as this. “He held the Senate floor with a marathon speech that began at 7pm ET Monday evening and lasted until Tuesday night. After 25 hours and 5 minutes speaking directly to the American people, Senator Booker broke the record for longest individual floor speech ever delivered, surpassing the previous record set by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 “.

His Marathon sacrifice was neither in vain, nor an exercise in futility. It was a powerful moment in our history, and a manifestation of spiritual and intentional power. The significance of it was not lost.

Only time will reveal the impact of the 25 hours and 5 minute sacrifice Senator Booker made during his speech and the discipline and preparation undertaken before the speech. The same is true for our labor, however small or large it may be. In a “moral moment”, such as times like this, we each have a part to contribute, a role to play, an investment to make. What lies before our moral moment is our social and economic future, and that of our children.

We are fortunate to have great witnesses of people, who went before us, during significant historical moments. Their sense of justice, and servitude in the face of adversity was extraordinary.

Their commitment, discipline and sacrifice towards justice has made significant social and economic changes in moments of global need and we are all the beneficiaries of it.

Eleanor Roosevelt

“When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?” “What could we accomplish if we knew we could not fail?”

John F. Kennedy

“And let every man and woman who works in any area of our national government, in any branch, at any level, be able to say with pride and with honor in future years: ‘I served the United States Government in that hour of our nation’s need.'”

Martin Luther King Jr.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” “Vanity asks, is it popular? Politics ask, will it work? But conscience and morality ask, is it right?”

Gandhi

“As soon as we lose the moral basis, we cease to be religious. There is no such thing as religion over-riding morality. Man, for instance, cannot be untruthful, cruel or incontinent and claim to have God on his side.”

Sonia M. Wignall

“Once again we are in a global “Moral Moment”. Our light cannot be dimmed out unless we ourselves blow out the candle. With all that we have been given, and the opportunities before us, what in this dispensation of time will be our individual contribution and investment towards change.”
