In a bid to increase digital talent in the country, the Indonesian government is making plans to offer dual citizenship for members of its diaspora working in the technology sector.

This was made known by the country’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan during his opening speech at the Microsoft Build: AI Day at JCC, Jakarta in April 2024.

He used the occasion to invite his country’s diaspora to accept the invitation for dual citizenship; and noted that 400 young people have been recruited, and returned to the country.

The Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights earlier revealed that 3912 Indonesian citizens decided to become Singaporean citizens during 2019 to 2022. They further went on to explain that the Indonesians chose to change citizenship to improve their welfare in response to low employment rates in the country.

Mr Luhut, however, while acknowledging the investment by Microsoft reiterated that human resources in Indonesia is fine, and the organisation will not regret investing in the country.
