International Migrants Day is observed worldwide on 18th December each year.
This date was chosen to coincide with the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990.
The celebration of International Migrants Day includes activities that promote inclusivity, empathy, and understanding of migrants’ experiences.
A coalition of migrant and Swiss associations in the municipality of Ostermundigen and the canton of Bern is celebrating this year’s International Day of Migration with a cultural event and a round table to exchange best practices on coexistence and participation.
The event will highlight the contributions of migrants, particularly in the world of work, and at the same time, the challenges they face and the need for protection. The municipality of Ostermundigen is invited to present its municipal integration program and practice. The event aims to strengthen further the networking of local, cantonal, and national actors who are active in coexistence and participation. The event promotes encounters and social contacts, the participation of migrants in public life, joint action and volunteer work in the field of migration. In this way, participants get to know each other better, inform each other about their organisations and discuss projects for possible cooperation and support. This strengthens socio-economic and political inclusion.
Integrated children and youth programs strengthen intergenerational dialogue. The evening will be crowned with cultural events, music and dance. The invited Swiss authorities, embassies, and other interest groups will experience firsthand the activities of migrants in the canton of Bern/Switzerland.
The event, to be held in Ostermundigen/BE, celebrates diversity and is open to all, regardless of background. It is an inclusive platform that welcomes migrants and natives, fostering a sense of unity and understanding.
ADMISSION IS FREE.
