The first ever African Heritage Festival in Anne Arundel County is set to take place on the 18th of September 2021 from 12 noon till 4pm.
The event will be organized by the African Diaspora Affairs of Anne Arundel County in partnership with the Odenton Regional Library, who will also be providing the venue for the festival.
The aim of the African Heritage Festival is to “bring awareness of the African culture, to educate individuals of the rich heritage, and to reflect on the economic impact in Anne Arundel County.”
The Website of the African Diaspora Affairs of Anne Arundel County describes the organisation as a “liaison between the African community and the Anne Arundel County government.” Its purpose is to “ensure that the County Executive Office is well informed and able to act effectively to the needs and concerns of the Africans living and or working in Anne Arundel County.” It organizes capacity building workshops, networking events, and provides resource access for individuals, families and businesses.
In addition to the African Heritage Festival, the African Diaspora Affairs of Anne Arundel County has supported successful previous events such as ‘Diaspora: A Black Heritage Celebration’ in association with the MLK Parade Committee, Annapolis Recreation and Parks, and the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis (HACA). The County also memorialized the 30th of May 2021 as “Black Wall Street Day” in remembrance of the one-hundred-year anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre.
Anne Arundel County is located in Maryland, US. It is also known as the “Land of Pleasant Living”, and is home to over 500,000 residents.
Sponsors of the Festival include Afropolitan Cities, World Remit, The Fourth Man Foundation, The Coordinating Center, Oula Home Care, Anne Arundel Medical Centre, and many more. There will be vendors, including local businesses who will be providing music, food, entertainment and so on.
