The COVID-19 pandemic has brought its own significant impact to the world. In Indonesia, COVID-19 has infected over 3 million people since the first identified case in March 2020 and at least 90.552 people have died due to the virus. (Source: www.covid19.go.id, accessed on July 30th 2021).
Diasporas include people who have migrated from their homelands as well as refugees from conflict areas around the world. In ensuring that diaspora engagement efforts are fruitful, we need to take all groups into account so that no one will be left out.
Humanitarianism requires an approach which involves the whole of society; and diasporas who are typically fast responding stakeholders need to be part of these systems. In order to have great impact and sustainable solutions, we need to collaborate and work together towards similar goals in providing humanitarian assistance to those in need.
The role of Media in bridging the communications gap in diaspora engagement has been acknowledged, but not effectively utilised. Traditionally known mass communication mediums have been complemented in this digital era by omnichannel platforms with avenues such as online magazines, mobile apps, blogs, podcasts, data directories and so on.
As part of the ongoing three-day Future Forum which will help catalyse engagement within the diaspora-development ecosystem, there will be an informal online Networking Session halfway through the conference which aims at looking ahead on how networking will look like.
